The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) is serving up a special blend of classical and jazz music next month in Taipei. The ¡§Black and White Fun Jazz ¡V World Premiere of ¡¥Seaside Hometown Guitar Concerto¡¦¡¨ concert takes place at 7:30pm on August 21 at the National Concert Hall in Taipei. For the event, the group will work with internationally renowned pianist Eric Chen Guan Yu and guitarist Su Chao-hsing.
The concert opens with Shostakovich¡¦s Festival Overture. It is a splendid brass piece with inspiring woodwind and strings sections; the clarinet parts are particularly festive. Following Shostakovich is Bizet¡¦s L'Arlesienne Suite No.1. This number was written by the French composer for Daudet¡¦s eponymous musical in 1872.
The closing number of the first half is Su Chao-hsing¡¦s Seaside Hometown Guitar Concerto. Known as the ¡§Prince of Guitar from the East,¡¨ Su is a highly accomplished and globally renowned guitarist. Su grew up in the seaside town of Tunggang in Pingtung County. Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Chinese music and Western music all had a profound influence on the culture of Tunggang. Having grown up in this special place, Su aimed to express the cultural diversity and his nostalgia for Tunggang life in his composition.
The second half of the concert includes a selection of jazz music performed by Taiwanese pianist Eric Chen Guan Yu and the ESO. The relaxing program includes the theme from Somewhere In Time and George Gershwin¡¦s I Got Rhythm.

Tickets for the ¡§EVA Air VIP Night ¡V Si-Qing Lu and Evergreen Symphony Orchestra¡¨ are available through the ERA Ticketing network. Various discounts are available. For details, go to www.orchestra.evergreen.com.tw or call the ESO at (02) 2351-6799.
