The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) will perform Singing
Liouduai – An Evening of Hakka Symphonies at 7:30pm on
March 4, 2008 at the National Concert Hall. Well-known
conductor Chen Shu-hsi will direct the group for the concert.
The repertoire for the evening consists of compositions
the ESO performed at the Liouduai Hakka Culture Park in
central Taiwan late last year as part of the A-ha Art
Festival.
The program consists of original compositions by Chen
Shu-hsi, Lee He-pu, and Liu Hsuei-hsuan. Inspired by the
history of and life in Liouduai, their works are magnificent,
cheerful, and characteristic of southern Taiwanese Hakka
culture. For the concert, the ESO will perform five symphonies
by the three composers. Chen’s duet A Meeting of Songs
is performed by well-known tenor Fang Wei-chen and soprano
Chen Huei-ru. Chen’s Eight Tones Concerto will be performed
by Chung Yunhui Hakka Eight Tones, a renowned musical
group from Liouduai. The group utilizes both Western and
Chinese instruments to express the music of the Southern
Taiwanese Hakka community.
To bring the same moving pieces to a northern audience,
the ESO teamed up with the Executive Yuan’s Council for
Hakka Affairs. The Council has made many efforts in recent
years to promote Liouduai music, an endeavor closely matching
the ESO’s mission to introduce Taiwanese folk music to
a wider audience.
